ABOUT CALEDONIA STUDIOS
Caledonia Studios is a small company dedicated to building the finest handmade arts and crafts furniture in America.
Tedd and his small team of craftsmen build a limited number of pieces per year. We belive in the ideals of form following function and honest construction techniques. What results is an heirloom quality piece of furniture, not a production piece.
Caledonia Studios was founded in 1997 by Tedd Colt after graduating from the California College of Arts and Crafts with a BFA degree in furniture design and sculpture. Tedd grew up in and around the historic bungalow neighborhoods of Pasadena and returned during his summers in college to restore neglected arts and crafts homes to help pay tuition. He quickly learned how to revive and restore the architecture to it original integrity and patina. After graduating he began designing and building handmade furniture with the same ideals that founded the American arts and crafts movement.
We also specialize in designing pieces for specific projects.
THE SWEDENBORGIAN CHURCH
The Swedenborgian church was built in 1895 and is a stunning example of pure American Arts and Crafts. Its interior combines a reverence for nature with aspects of early California missions and the burgeoning Arts and crafts movement.
In 2004 the churches congregation put out a call for designs for a new altar. Several designers submitted ideas for this important addition to the chapel and after an exhaustive review Tedd's design was chosen.
Inspired by the massive Madrone timber supports and the iconic maple chairs, Tedd designed an altar that included inlays of the the stylized Swedenborgian cross on the front and sides. The top is inset with limestone to withstand decades of candle wax.
The Altar is now the focal point of the chapel. It sits in quiet homage to all the artisans and influences that came before it and looks as if it has always been there.
